The "Godfathers of Grindcore" are at it again with their 15th studio
album, (Century Media) Utilitarian. Produced by Russ Russell (the
Wildhearts, the Exploited), and the follow-up to their 2009's Time
Waits for No Slave is an abrasive audible affair. Its full of
screams, moshpit-inducing staccato riffs, and speed rhythms for every
headbanger to enjoy . Whether it's the aggressive "Orders of
Magnitude," or the post-apocalyptic rage of "Errors in the Signals,"
or the death metal fused "Protection Racket," its all up in your face
excellent . Mark Greenway says that Joy Division and My Bloody
Valentine were major influences on this record and that a good thing
. The opener "Circumspect" is a doom-laden ambient instrumental which
briefly hints at a more industrial and drearier direction . In
"Everyday Pox" this features a chaotic saxophone solo from John Zorn
(who I totally dig for years ) which renders his instrument of choice
to become almost un- recognizable . All along the while there are
Gregorian chants that await you in "Fall on Their Swords."This music
is so brutal and up in your face you cant deny it and so
un-apologetically fierce to say the least . Utilitarian proves Napalm
Death certainly aren't going away with time . Fans of their sound
will love this CD. This album hits you hard . Mad props must be given
to Napalm Death for achieving what so many bands fail to do these days
.Yes, that is to stay true to their roots. Grind on !
